Bouncing Back: The Post-Indulgence Fix

The holiday season brings lots of fun, laughter, drinks and treats. Even those of us who rarely eat a lot of unhealthy foods, are tempted with holiday treats, and the drinks. Nothing goes better with family than wine.

While I am now planning to do the 3-Day Refresh fairly regularly to kick myself back in gear when I go off the rails a bit, it’s not developed to do more than every month, at a minimum. So, after doing some research, I’ve found a way to get my body back to feeling a bit more normal without the intensity of the 3-Day Refresh.

1) Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate. From the morning after an overindulgence, start every morning with hot lemon water (I love using True Lemon because it’s just easier than cutting lemons, but a fresh lemon wedge works too). Wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything other than water after you drink it to kick start your digestive system. Add a little ginger to reduce bloating even further. Then, aim to drink AT LEAST half your body weight in ounces of water.

2) No bubbles, no alcohol. Step away from the soda and the booze. Both will amplify how gross you already feel. Stick to herbal tea, lemon or lime water, and artificial sweeteners (stevia is okay).

3) Veg up, not out. When you feel icky from overindulgence, the last thing you want to do is workout. But be active, even if it’s just going for a walk, or spending some time on the stationary bike, you’ll start to feel better when your body’s natural detox systems get a boost from your blood moving faster through your body. Yoga is the ideal detox workout, because so many poses are designed to help your body work more efficiently.

4) It’s a Moo point. There are lots of arguments on both sides of the, “Should humans consume cow dairy” argument. That’s beside the point. It takes a lot of energy for your body to digest dairy, and because of the way it interacts with enzymes, often causes bloating, or worse, internally. After overindulging, try to go at least a week without dairy. It will give your body time to flush itself before fighting with itself again. Stick to plant based “dairy” if you need it for smoothies, coffee, or recipes.

5) 5-8 will make you feel great. The main part of your diet after an indulgent weekend, week, or even just a night, should be fresh fruits and veggies. Pairing them with good fats, and lean protein will help your body digest them, and will fuel your day with nutrients. Think salads with lots of greens, topped with grilled chicken breast, avocado and lime juice, or veggie curry. Aim for 5-8 servings of veggies, and 3-5 servings of fresh fruits each day. You’ll feel full, satisfied, and will fill your body’s carb needs with those rather than needing processed carbs to keep your body going.

So, after yet another week of holiday parties, Hanukkah gatherings, or too many taste tests during a bake-a-thon, give these a try, and feel your body get back to normal, quickly.
